Bill Patrick: Adjusting the Dream
Thursday 13 October 2022, from 7:00 p.m. until late
17 Little Portland Street, London W1W 8BP
Coinciding with Frieze London, Adjusting the Dream is the first UK exhibition of American photographer and musician Bill Patrick (b. 1977). It features a dozen works of varying dimensions taken between 2018 and 2022. Drawn from two different photography series, the display teases out tensions between intimacy and politics, nature and culture, isolation and familiarity. From the first series, a selection of colour photographs documents travelling periods against the backdrop of Berlin’s BLM protests, Tokyo’s deserted casinos and Phuket’s rice fields. Playing with high contrasts, patterns and repetition, they feature eerie landscapes, urban scenes and enigmatic portraits.Meanwhile, the black-and-white photographs from the second series weretaken across the State of New York, including in the Hudson Valley, where the artist now lives. Using double-exposure techniques, they incorporate outdoor scenery, floral motifs and phantasmatic figures. Altogether, the works capture a period of transition, marked by the onset of the global pandemic and the consequent need to envision new individual and collective possibilities.Navigating between the ordinary and the otherworldly, Adjusting the Dream is an ode to the fleeting beauty of metamorphosis.
